Greetings!

First, I want to wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July holiday! Remember what this is all about (not just the fireworks and great chow on the grill) and more important, send up a few kind thoughts for our men and women (and their families) who are away from home serving in defense of our Nation.

Although it's a holiday week, there's no slowing down over here!

Be sure to check out the News You Missed for updates related to SDVOSB Set-Asides, Reverse Auctions, FedBizOpps and the FBI and the Federal Prison Industries Contracting Preferences.

Any of these could have an impact on how you do business, for better or for worse.

An Army of One (One Billion Dollars, that is!)
You've heard the slogan 'Army Strong' right? Check in with the Simplified Acquisition Spotlight below to learn another meaning for it that relates to over $1 billion in spending via the simplified acquisition procedures. On July 9th we'll get into the details of how, what, who and where the Army spends it's simplified acquisition dollars (and how much is awarded to small business and how much is paid by purchase card)!

Don't forget about the OFPP/SBA memo earlier this month giving agencies guidance on maximizing small business participation in Simplified Acquisitions! We'll discuss the memo and more about simplified acquisitions on July 5th in Columbia, MD during The ASBCs of Government Contracting.

Is Uncle Sam Forgetting About Small Business?

It seems we have forgotten
businessman questionabout the plain, no check-box to speak of, hardworking American 'Small Business' and are satisfied to see it fade into history.

If we are not there already, how long will it be before 'ordinary' small businesses are shut out of federal contracting for simply not having a socioeconomic designation?

More of my thoughts on this subject in the Chief Visionary Blog located at www.theasbc.org/visionary.

How much does it cost to register as a federal contractor?

I got a call the other day from a guy I know who has been in this business for a while, as an employee. He decided to start his own company and called me for a gut check about the registration process. "Why does it cost $599 to get registered as a government contractor?" he asked.
