Members Step Up to Support Day-to-Day Operations and Success of Annual B2G Essentials™ Conference after Chief Visionary Takes Ill
"Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated." (I always wanted to say that!) You
may have heard I was ill and recently in the hospital and may even have
heard I underwent surgery, etc. It's all true and I'm happy to say
after two weeks in two different facilities, I am home and on the mend.
What happened? We're still waiting to find out which bus it was that ran
me over, but in a nutshell, due to a venomous bite and/or bacterial
infection, I ended up needing a few surgeries on my leg to undo the
damage being done by the venom/infection. I'll leave it at that.
Friends
and family are a true gift and I would not have made it through without
their love and support. My motivation was getting back home to Maggie
and our little girl Pem. Speaking of Maggie...she's a real trooper! In
addition to taking care of our home, our daughter and me, she kept
things steady at The ASBC, too. I don't know how she managed it all, but
she did it, well. I'm starting proceedings with the Vatican to have
Bill and Lin (Maggie's parents) canonized for all of the sacrifices they
made during this time especially when it came to Pem. There is no way I
can thank them enough.
Then there is this other group of folks that stepped up to "Protect This House" called The American Small Business Coalition.
In
addition to our employees (Shanita, Linda and Pigeon) stepping up in
more ways than one, a number of our members did so in a huge way. Mind
you, these are business owners and representatives of member companies
with families of their own who came together to make sure The ASBC
continued operation as if nothing had changed. Did I mention there was
an annual conference about to get underway? For
the first time in the history of our organization, I was not in
attendance at one of our major events. Our conference planning
committee, staff and thirty volunteers made the final planning and
actual execution of the event a huge success!

I
was getting occasional play-by-play throughout the day and was antsy
not being there, but the folks we called on and those who stepped up of
their own initiative saved the day.
This hearkens back to
comments we've received over the years from members and the casual
passerby about the "feel" of this organization. We don't have the
institutional feel of many organizations, quite the opposite. It's more
familial at The ASBC. You see it in the way members collaborate and
share business opportunities and especially in the way members talk
about and defend the organization. Sure, we're a little quirky with our
rules regarding membership and not allowing members to solicit one
another, and people are constantly amazed that we actually turn people
down for membership based on our application criteria. We didn't build
The ASBC for everyone, we built it for anyone that sees our culture as
conducive to their personal and business growth and wants to be part of a
community that truly works together and looks out for one another.
I think this recent episode reaffirms the philosophy Maggie and I try to instill in The ASBC.
