Government Sector Partygoers
Usher In Holiday Season by Networking and Giving
Staff, Members, Friends and Supporters of The American Small
Business Coalition converge on Falls Church, VA and raise nearly six thousand
dollars for Wounded Warriors and families of fallen service members and an
additional $1200 to recognize top cadets of the SCSU ROTC Bulldog Battalion.
Columbia, MD December 8, 2009 -
- Supporting the communities where they work and live is one
of the commitments of The American Small Business Coalition (The ASBC) and its
members since the organization was established in 2004. On Tuesday, December 1,
The ASBC hosted its annual holiday mixer that doubled as a fundraiser for the
American Freedom Foundation and the SCSU ROTC Scholarship Award created in memory of
their friend and former advisory board member Lieutenant General (ret.) Henry
Doctor, Jr., USA, who passed away in 2007.

The sold out event was a festive
celebration with food, drink and wall-to-wall networking where the only
interruptions were for raffle prize giveaways and special announcements during
the course of the evening. Through the efforts of more than twenty member
volunteers and eighteen raffle item and silent auction donors, both causes benefitted
from a complete sellout of silent auction items, and record raffle ticket
sales. Proceeds also included a portion of sponsor fees and the tips earned by guest
bartenders from Government and Industry that included Mary Davie, U.S. General Services Administration; Bridget Bean, U.S. Small Business
Administration; Riley Repko, HQ
U.S. Air Force; Amy Morris,
Federal News Radio; and Nick
Wakeman, Washington Technology.
The ASBC raises $5770.00 for the American Freedom
Foundation (AFF)
"Not too many people fully
understand what the military goes through on a daily basis,” states Jack L. Tilley,
the former Sergeant Major of the Army and co-founder of the American Freedom
Foundation. "Our goal is to increase our ability to address the needs of our
Nation’s wounded and disabled veterans. The unsolicited support received from patriotic
organizations like The American Small Business Coalition definitely helps us
work towards that goal.”
Some of the organizations that
benefit from the work of the American Freedom Foundation include Operation
Rebound, Fisher House, Military Child Education Coalition, Tragedy Assistance
Program for Survivors (TAPS) and Operation Second Chance.
"To say it’s an honor to be part
of this is an incredible understatement,” says Guy Timberlake, chief visionary
and chief executive officer of The American Small Business Coalition. "You
cannot say ‘thank you’ often enough or in enough ways to let our troops and
their families know how much their sacrifices are appreciated.”
The American Freedom Foundation,
Inc. a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation organized to honor veterans of
America's armed forces with special emphasis on welfare and educational issues
facing those wounded or disabled in action and the families of veterans killed
in action during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Scholarship for Cadets of the
South Carolina State University ROTC Program
"Thanks to the support of guest
bartenders at our monthly mixers during the past year and those participating
in last week’s holiday mixer, we’ve been able to reach our goal for this award,”
says Margaret Timberlake, president and co-founder of The ASBC. "We look
forward to travelling to South Carolina in April to present the first annual
award to be given in honor and memory of General Doctor and his legacy of
giving and leadership.”
The Lieutenant General (ret.)
Henry Doctor, Jr. Leadership Award annually recognizes the top male and female
cadets of the South Carolina State University Bulldog Battalion during the
first semester of their senior year after completing the Leader Development and
Assessment Course (LDAC). Cadets are selected by the Professor of Military
Science based on their performance in four categories: leadership, academic
achievement, physical fitness and a strong desire to serve in the active
component of the United State Army.
