Leader in Supporting B2G Community Adds

Support for Our Troops, Their Families and

Our Nation’s Future Leaders

On December 1, 2009 in Falls Church, VA, The American Small Business Coalition will host its annual government sector holiday mixer to benefit the American Freedom Foundation and the Lieutenant General (ret.) Henry Doctor, Jr. Leadership Award.

Columbia, MD November 17, 2009 - - Since 2004, The American Small Business Coalition (The ASBC) has successfully facilitated helping its members gain an edge in doing business with federal, state and local government agencies and their contractors. By tapping the resources of The ASBC, small, medium and large businesses can develop market intelligence and relationships critical to identifying and capturing business opportunities. Every year, The ASBC hosts a holiday network mixer to ring in the season.

The ASBC 2009 Holiday Mixer will take place at the Velocity Five Sports Restaurant and Bar in Falls Church, VA and will welcome roughly one-hundred fifty guests from the government sector. In addition to great food, libations, plenty of networking and holiday cheer, the event will feature guest bartenders from Government and Industry who will earn “tips” which support an annual ROTC Scholarship Award. The list of guest bartenders includes Mary Davie, U.S. General Services Administration; Bridget Bean, U.S. Small Business Administration; Riley Repko, HQ U.S. Air Force; Amy Morris, Federal News Radio; and Nick Wakeman, Washington Technology. Visit for more information about the event.

As part of The ASBC’s ongoing commitment to community, the annual holiday mixer serves as an opportunity to support charities selected by the organizations’ Founders. Last year’s beneficiary, Tigerlily Foundation, received more than $3,000.00 from proceeds raised during the silent auction and fifty-fifty raffle. This support ultimately provided financial assistance to four mothers battling breast cancer through the payment of their chemotherapy bills and the purchase of prepared meals for those weak from receiving chemotherapy treatments.

This year, The ASBC selected the American Freedom Foundation and the Lieutenant General (ret.) Henry Doctor, Jr. Leadership Award as beneficiaries of this year’s event.

American Freedom Foundation
“Many companies in The ASBC provide goods and services in support of the missions of our nation’s military, and many of these companies are led by Veterans,” says Guy Timberlake, Chief Visionary and CEO of The ASBC. “This and the good work being done by co-founder Jack Tilley, (the twelfth Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army) and the rest of the American Freedom Foundation team made them an easy selection.”

The American Freedom Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation organized to honor veterans of America's armed forces and raise money and awareness for various veterans' organizations with special emphasis directed to welfare and educational issues facing those wounded in action, those disabled and families and children of veterans killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Lieutenant General (ret.) Henry Doctor, Jr. Leadership Award
After graduation from Berkeley Training High School in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, LTG Henry Doctor, Jr. attended South Carolina State University, and in 1954 received his bachelor's degree and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He completed 35 years of service in the U.S. Army and served with distinction in leadership positions at every level. His last three assignments before retirement were: Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Material Development and Readiness Command, Alexandria, Virginia; Commanding General, 2nd Infantry Division, Eighth U.S. Army, Republic of Korea and; Inspector General of the U.S. Army, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

“Since starting The ASBC, Guy and I have been constantly blessed through the support of our advisory board,” adds Margaret Timberlake, co-founder and President of The ASBC. “As a member of that board, General Doctor was someone who ensured we understood the benefit The ASBC provides to small businesses and the government sector as a whole. When he passed away in 2007, we immediately began developing a program that would continue and honor his legacy of leadership and giving back.”

The LTG Henry Doctor, Jr. Leadership Award is presented annually to the top male and female cadets at South Carolina State University during the first semester of their senior year after completing the Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC). The Cadets are selected by the Professor of Military Science based on their performance in four categories: leadership, academic achievement, physical fitness and a strong desire to serve in the active component of the United State Army.
