For The Government Sector: Manassas, Tysons and Columbia BoB, VA Forum Wrap, CORE™ Collaborations
Sunday, August 16, 2009
Have a great and productive week! We managed to survive last week and have a slightly less hectic one in store. We hope!
Here's a rundown of what we have planned for this week...
NAVIGATOR: About Our B2G Business Social Network (Webinar), BoB Manassas, BoB Tysons, BoB Columbia, CORE Collaborations Call (CORE Small Business Members Only)
Tales From a Sold Out Red Zone! We've been telling you that our guest bartender for the August Red Zone Government Mixer was Kendra Turner, Director of the GSA/PBS Industry Relations Division, and we also told you she was bringing members of her team with her (sending a big ASBC shout out to Brian, Janise, Michael and Sandyha at GSA/PBS for their support!).
What we couldn't tell you, mainly because we didn't know, is that
Kendra sandbagged her "behnd the bar" talents! Not only was she mixing
drinks while flipping bottles behind her back andcatching them just
before they hit the ground, she and the actual bartender were back
there tossing bottles back and forth just like Tom Cruise in Cocktail. Okay, not really. But Kendra did manage to make the actor Christopher Walken
very happy (No, he wasn't there!) by virtue of the number of times our
"tip cowbell" was rung that evening. Each "tip" she brought in to
support the LTG Henry Doctor Jr. Leadership Award was accompanied by a clang!!! I can just see Walken smiling as he thinks back to his SNL Blue Oyster Cult skit where he "uddered" those famous words, "More cowbell!"
To be serious for a second though, Kendra did a great job that evening. In fact, she did so well, later in the day
when we were all winding down from a great event, a "mystery" donor
sent in an online donation to match the "pot" from earlier that
evening. Thanks to Kendra and to the online donor who both are helping
The ASBC to support the continued development of our Nations' military
and community leaders via support for the Army ROTC program. Hooahh!
Fort Detrick Business Over Breakfast™ Launch a Success!Last Wednesday, Harry Ponack of Matthew Moving welcomed guests to the very first Ft. Detrick BoB, which included presenting COL Judith Robinson, Commander of the U.S.Army Garrison at Fort Detrick
with an individually numbered ASBC Fifth Anniversary Challenge Coin and
a hearty thank you! COL Robinson talked to Harry and I about some of
the upcoming activities associated with BRAC at Fort Detrick and Forest
Glen. We'll be following up with her office to ensure we can pass along
information as it comes available. The event was sold out thanks in part to the support of our friends Darryl Rekemeyer and Shelia Washington of the Fort Detrick Business Development Office
(FDBDO) who joined us that morning as well. If you plan to approach any
of the activities at Fort Detrick for business opportunities, be sure
your first stop is to www.fdbdo.com
or physically by their offices. They are a wealth of information and
are more than happy to help you learn the lay of the land for this
installation. BoB Fort Detrick will be hosted by Harry on the second
Wednesday of each month at the Perkins Restaurant. See you there!
Vendor Community...The VA Wants You!
Last Thursday, The ASBC's Chief Visionary and several of our Members had the opportunity to participate in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Supplier Relationship Transformation Forum (SRTF) convened by W. Scott Gould, Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs (pictured, left) to discuss initiatives the VA is undertaking
to improve its partnership with the vendor community and to assist the
Department in transforming and streamlining its acquisition process.
The all-day event included participation by VA's senior leadership to include: Roger Baker, the Assistant Secretary for Information and Technology (also serves as the Departments' CIO); Glenn Haggstrom, the Executive Director for Acquisition, Logistics and Construction, our friend Gail Wegner, the Acting Director of the OSDBU and Deputy Director of the Center for Veterans Enterprise; and Rita Reed,
Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Management. We had good
opportunities to speak with several of them (and present them our Fifth
Anniversary Coins) and look forward to a continuation of what they
started the other day. They have the attention of their industrial base
and we look forward to assisting in any way to help facilitate an air
of trust and collaboration.
