Inaugural ASBC Conference and Awards Dinner Lauded by Government and Industry as Success Worth Repeating

Market intelligence, industry education, B2G relationship building and fifth anniversary awards ceremony round out first-time full-day event for premier federal sector membership organization

Columbia, MD, March 8, 2009—In the days since The American Small Business Coalition (The ASBC) Fifth Anniversary Conference and Awards Dinner (www.turningfive.com), feedback has poured in and the event has been deemed as a huge success. This first-ever conference and award dinner will become an annual event.

The ASBC is a membership organization exclusively focused on supporting the development of relationships, best practices and market intelligence for companies doing business in the government sector. The primary goal is to help government agencies identify viable and vetted companies to support their mission requirements.

A goal of the conference and award dinner was to help attendees learn and improve how they do business with the federal sector. To that end, keynotes, breakout sessions and panel discussions filled the day with representatives from the government and accomplished industry professionals. One such presenter was Mary A. Davie, Assistant Commissioner, Office of Assisted Acquisition Services, Federal Acquisition Service, General Services Administration (GSA).

“GSA was honored to be included in the American Small Business Coalition's Fifth Anniversary event. It was a great opportunity for us to be able to engage directly with The ASBC members, particularly related to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” said Davie. “Additionally, the event provided a fantastic forum for government/industry collaboration resulting in several follow up conversations between ASBC members and GSA to discuss ways we can work together to support specific federal agency customers' needs,” she said.

Other government presenters included Casey Coleman, Chief Information Officer, GSA; Delores Thompson-Gad, Assistant Director, Office of Small Business Programs Mission and Installation Contracting Command, Directorate of Contracting Fort Belvoir; and Soraya Correa, Director of Procurement Operations, Department of Homeland Security.

David A. Drabkin, Acting Chief Acquisition Officer and Senior Procurement Executive, GSA, was the featured speaker of a special edition of the Washington Breakfast Club™, which celebrated 25 years as the area’s premier information exchange for Government and Industry.

“At events like the 5th Anniversary Conference, I was able to sit in a briefing given by the GSA CIO with twenty others and ask all the questions I wanted,” " Steve Mackie, President, Storage Strategies, Inc. “Membership in The ASBC offers tremendous access to influential people and high value information to its members. The seminar given by Courtney Fairchild of Global Services Inc. on GSA Schedules, was an outstanding primer on the relevance and value of the GSA Schedule in the marketplace. Tremendous access, valuable information and great people, the ASBC is a definite return on my investment," he said.

"The charter of The ASBC is focused on ensuring government agencies and their prime contractors have additional means of reaching qualified and quality small business industry partners who can support agency requirements,” said Guy Timberlake, Co-Founder and Chief Visionary of The ASBC. “Concurrently, we help our member companies understand the nuances of effectively doing business in this marketplace based on their ability to deliver, their knowledge and their experience and not their small business designations or related socioeconomic goals.”

"Given our organization-wide goals, our primary goal of the Fifth Anniversary Conference and Awards Dinner was to ensure the event was a good use of everyone's time. According to the feedback we've received from the attendees, volunteers and presenters we've spoken to, we succeeded," added Timberlake.

Co-Founder and President Margaret Timberlake said, "We honestly didn't know what to expect due to the current state of the economy when we first started planning the event, not to mention every other conference, awards dinner and networking social that happens in this town every day. We have been pleasantly surprised and committed to making this an annual event,” she said.

A highlight was the evening’s presentation of the 2009 Member Awards recognizing the achievements and contributions of individuals and companies participating in The ASBC’s Associate, CORE™ and Government Access membership programs. The honorees were: Member of the Year, Judy Bradt, Principal & CEO, Summit Insight; Flag Bearer, Joe Martin, Client Development Director, Employment Enterprises Inc.; Eagle Spirit Award, Angela Dingle, President & CEO, Ex Nihilo Management, LLC; Rookie of the Year, Emily Summers, Principal, Market Torque, LLC; New Member of the Year, NavtechGPS; Founders' Award Presented by Margaret Timberlake to Art Medici, Managing Partner, 9th Degree Advisors, LLC; and Founders' Award Presented by Guy Timberlake to Mission Essential Personnel, LLC.
