Let me start by saying "Top, you were right!"
For clarification, the previous statement is for my retired First Sergeant buddy who constantly reminds me to get out and take advantage of speaking opportunities to share knowledge and help those not already associated with us to understand the value of The American Small Business Coalition.
As a result of Wayne McDonald's (SSA OSDBU Director) kind invitation to participate in the 4th Annual Social Security Administration (SSA) Small Business Procurement Conference, I had a great time, saw some old friends and members, and garnered several new members as a result. In addition to having a small exhibit at the event (thanks to Harry Ponack for his help, too!) I also presented information on Simplified Acquisitions and how companies can leverage these opportunities to get their foot in the door and grow past performance and relationships.
For those not familiar with the impact of purchases made under these streamlined acquisition rules that favor small businesses, Uncle Sam processed over 620K contract actions in FY10 totaling more than $11B. More than half of that was awarded to small business.
The Social Security Administration issued just under 1300 of these in FY10 valued at just under $82M and has processed nearly 1800 simplified acquisition actions this fiscal year for roughly $52M in awards.
The very cool and humbling follow-up to my presentation were not only the number of attendees that thanked me for the information they felt was very valuable, but the SSA acquisition folks who came up to compliment me on the content and delivery-style.
I would also like to give kudos to my friend Rose Wang of Binary Group (a PrimeConnection™ Member) for her presentation as well. Binary Group is a success story that is still being written. Rose is a savvy business executive who is always willing to share her insights with up and coming entrepreneurs. As I said at the start of my presentation to the folks in attendance, like E.F. Hutton, when Rose speaks, you should listen.
Many thanks to Ms. Dianne Rose, Associate Commissioner, Office of Acquisition and Grants at SSA, for her very kind open invitation. I look forward to hosting Dianne at a soon-to-be scheduled AgencyInsight event in Columbia, MD!
It was a great way to finish the week and start the weekend!
