ANC's vs. Everyone Else, Again.

Posted By Guy Timberlake, The American Small Business Coalition, LLC, Sunday, October 10, 2010
ANC's vs. Everyone Else, Again.

Recent article "Proposal would end Alaska native contracting advantages" by GovExec's Robert Brodsky is example why "other than small businesses" eat our lunch, and the small business community continues to lose out.

Alaska Natives absolutely do deserve benefits under government contracting policies, but no more than any other socioeconomic group.

Additionally, the rhetoric consistently articulated in this and every ANC-related article about the "differences" between ANC's and other companies that are not tribally-owned (specifically addressing the level of benefit ANC's provide to their community) is apples and oranges. The size of the entire tribal community compared to the size of the non-tribal communities is night and day. Many non-ANC small businesses consistently participate in corporate social responsibility activities. If someone were to actually assess the amount of "community dollars and time" contributed by non-ANC companies, I believe that argument would be squelched quickly.

The fact that an ANC company conglomeration rivaling some of the larger companies in our industry, is still viewed as a "small business," is unfair and a slap in the face to the other very hard-working and Patriotic men and women business owners who are not Alaska Natives.

It is time for parity so small businesses of every socioeconomic designation can be fairly considered based on their technical capability, domain knowledge, sense of mission and capacity to perform.

With that said...

While the collective Small Business Community continues to splinter  into their respective corners (Small, 8(a), SDB, Women, Veteran, Service Disabled Veteran, Alsaka Native, Native American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, HUBZone, etc,) the rest of the government sector is picking the proverbial budgetary carcass clean. We need to remember at the end of the day, we are all SMALL BUSINESSES.

How about that.
